I watched the FYRE Festival documentary on Netflix over the weekend and I thought it was really interesting. It is so fascinating how people are so easily captivated by social media influencers. It seems a little ridiculous now, but when the social media posts about the festival were coming out it seemed amazing and like a once in a lifetime opportunity. I remember hearing all about the festival and seeing very popular influencers posting all about it on Instagram and thinking this event is going to be so cool. People probably never thought it would be a scam because of all the famous people talking about it and promoting it. The whole festival was poorly thought out and just should not have continued when the creators realized that it wasn't right. The island was just not right for a festival and to house people and the CEO, Billy, should have realized that early on. This whole festival really shows you how big of a part social media plays in today's society. Once a couple of social media influencers start posting about a new event, everyone wants to be apart of it. Thousands of people had no trouble paying thousands of dollars for a brand new festival that they only knew about through social media. They felt comfortable doing this because they trust influencers and they look up to them. People want to fit in and do what is popular in society and stay in the loop and it seemed like FYRE Festival would have been the 'it' event to be at.
